PAUL THEROUX: MY TRAVEL WISH LIST

Paul Theroux: My Travel Wish List
From the article:

“You’ve been everywhere,” people say to me, but that’s a laugh. My wish list of places is not only long but, in many cases, blindingly obvious. Yes, I have been to Patagonia and Congo and Sikkim, but I haven’t been to the most scenic American states, never to Alaska, Montana, Idaho or the Dakotas, and I’ve had only the merest glimpse of Kansas and Iowa. I want to see them, not flying in but traveling slowly on the ground, keeping to back roads, and defying the general rule of “Never eat at a place called Mom’s, never play cards with a man called Doc ...”

Nothing to me has more excitement in it than the experience of rising early in the morning in my own house and getting into my car and driving away on a long, meandering trip through North America. Not much on earth can beat it in travel for a sense of freedom — no pat-down, no passport, no airport muddle, just revving an engine and then “Eat my dust.”

SOLD: 2000 FORD CHINOOK CONCOURSE XL

A very weird symmetry is happening with increasing frequency in my life and manifesting itself in small, coincidental (meaningless) ways. Example(s): This vehicle was bought & sold on the 17th day exactly five months apart, and ended its tenure with exactly 7000 miles on the odometer. My summer trip to Oregon began with a flight on the 4th of July and ended on the 4th of September, exactly two months apart. Both flights were one-way tickets (meaning the dates were randomly selected).

RHODE ISLAND

I pass nearly 60 days out west without rain, and all that time without a rousting, but I get both within 48 hours of returning to New England. The soggy view from within my warm camper at Weekapaug, RI., before the 1:00 AM flashlight & tap on the window. It was all worth it for three days of fun in the rain as Hurricane Katia swept past the Rhode Island coast. Here I enjoyed a well-known spot in the SW:
